When Do Students Sit the 13+ Exams?
Most students take the 13+ Entrance exams in Year 8, typically around the age of 12 to 13. These exams are usually taken in the summer term (June) of Year 8, though some schools may set their own timelines or require earlier assessments, such as ISEB Pre-Tests in Year 6 or Year 7.
For competitive schools, the admissions process often begins much earlier, with registration required years in advance and pre-assessments or interviews scheduled as early as Year 6. That’s why many families begin preparation well ahead of time, sometimes as early as Year 5 to ensure their child develops the necessary subject knowledge, exam skills, and confidence without last-minute pressure.

For entry into competitive independent and boarding schools, early preparation is key. Most students begin preparing for 13+ Common Entrance exams and other admissions tests at least one to two years in advance, often starting in Year 6 or Year 7.
Starting early gives your child time to build subject knowledge gradually, strengthen exam technique, and grow in confidence without the stress of last-minute cramming.
If your child is taking pre-tests in Year 6 or sitting school-specific admissions exams, earlier preparation may be necessary.
